    is there an age limit to get into concept art?

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus 5 дней назад

      I would say it's never to early or too late to start. Young people can always begin building skills and filling up their visual libraries with cool stuff. For older artists or those starting a second career - there is really no ageism or exclusiveness - older artists seem to have a longer and broader memory of cool design languages and pop culture and can often bring unique value to a project. Whether you feel you are on the too young or too old end of the spectrum, I would strongly urge you not to rule yourself out

    I'm confused, how is he making brush strokes without using a clipping mask and it doesn't go outside the outline? And also not just stracing around the edges with the eraser?? Please help

    • @Will-vz3yf
      @Will-vz3yf 9 дней назад

      Also how is he creating the nice gradients without using the smudge tool, is it the soft brush? Ps. Thank for the amazing, actionable advice!

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus 9 дней назад

      Sorry, I know the video is sped up and a lot of steps like that get totally lost, but no worries, I can clarify that. I'm painting within selections but they are hidden. I will command click the thumbnail of the layer of the main shape silhouette. That creates a selection with a dotted line so that I can paint within that shape on other layers. I hit command H to hide the dotted selection line to avoid the distraction. Let me know if that doesn't fully answer your question but I think that was what you were referring to.

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus 9 дней назад

      You got it! Just a soft airbrush to get those soft gradients.

    • @Will-vz3yf
      @Will-vz3yf 8 дней назад

      @@fowlerillus By the way, do you know if there is a way to create a selection within another selection? Sort of like a clipping mask for a clipping mask, so that you can stay within the initial shape while making another shape with the (probably polygonal) lasso tool, without just putting a lasso tool over a clipping mask? I feel that it would speed up my work flow. No worries if not of course!

    something to counter is that i always like finding detail in a piece that i didnt know i would find. like a small corner of a piece that noone would look at. i do like art that is efficient with detail. but detailing something noone would thing to detail is something thats fun to find.

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus 15 дней назад

      That's a really good point. I definitely didn't mean to say that all detail is bad - I love finding those little lovingly crafted areas of focus in art too and that's a really cool idea to put it somewhere unexpected like an easter egg.

    My problem is is that I never get the colors right when I want to add a character into the mixture :/ I also have difficulty with making something look actually large

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus 15 дней назад

      That can be quite a challenge. I think using a photo or another piece of art to sample colors from is a great way to practice and to master that atmospheric perspective bit. As for making something seem huge - those color queues can help communicate distance (and hence size) but there are other ways like density of detail and other scale queues that can help make something seem massive.

    usually people say that our jobs as a concept artist will be going vanish because of ai well what do u think about it?? can i contineu my grind??

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus 29 дней назад

      Great question and it's probably time for another video on that. The short answer is that I just don't know but I have reasons for optimism. Broadly, I think AI is going to change life in huge ways for all people and professionals so I think we are in for a very strange 5-10 years ahead for humanity. For concept art and illustration, while I have heard reports of layoffs happening around the industry, things seem very steady from my perspective. I am personally busier than I have ever been but much more importantly, younger artists who I have mentored are starting their careers so the jobs are still out there - even as AI tools are becoming widely used. This leads me to believe and hope that AI is not solving all problems that a concept artist is called upon to solve, that people still like working with people and that creatives are still valued in larger projects. I think pursuing art as a career or even a hobby is still as worthwhile today as it was five years ago - it has always been a hard road and a competitive world, so in many ways this latest challenge doesn't feel much different. Hoping for the best!
